Egypt Through a Referendum President Sisi will be in Power until 2030

According to Agence France Presse reported that from April 20 to 22 local time, Egypt held a referendum on constitutional amendments. According to the election committee of the country, the referendum was approved with a support rate of 88.83%. The current president, Abdel Fattah al Sisi will be in power until 2030.

     Sisi is 65 years old and graduated from the Egyptian Military Academy. He has served as the Egyptian military officer in Saudi Arabia, the commander of the Northern Military Region, the director of the Military Intelligence Bureau, and the Minister of National Defense. He was elected president in May 2014, was sworn in in June of that year, and re-elected in June 2018.

     The most important provisions of the constitutional amendments passed by the referendum include extending the presidency from the current four years to six years and being able to stand for election again. The adoption of the constitutional amendment means that the current President, Abdel Fattah al Sisi, will be in power until 2030.  

 In addition, the constitutional amendments include the allocation of 25% of the parliamentary seats to female candidates, the re-establishment of the upper house of parliament (the Senate), and the restoration of the position of vice president. 

 Previously, on April 16, local time, the Egyptian parliament voted on the constitutional amendment, and finally passed the result of 531 votes in favor, 22 votes against, and one abstained.

     Ibrahim, chairman of the Egyptian National Election Commission, announced that he said at the press conference in Cairo: "The referendum on constitutional amendments will be completely supervised by the judiciary." He said that each ballot box has a judge, media and folk. Society will follow this process. At least 55 million of Egypt’s 110 million people are eligible for the referendum.
